A Pioneer in Prevention Communication
The mission of the Federal Centre for Health Education (Bundeszentrale für gesundheitliche Aufklärung, BZgA) is the prevention of infections and diseases and the promotion of healthy behavior. The "Sexual Health, Prevention of HIV and other STIs" department has achieved a particularly high level of public awareness since the 1980s with the enormously successful campaigns "Gib Aids keine Chance" ("Don't give Aids a chance") and "Mach's mit" ("Do it with a condom").
Both associated information portals have been developed and maintained by d-SIRE since 2005 and are fully accessible. Since 2016, d-SIRE has also been comprehensively responsible for the successor campaign "LIEBESLEBEN" on the internet.
The online offerings of "Gib Aids keine Chance" and "Welt-Aids-Tag" were both awarded the BIENE Award for accessible website development.
Selected Projects
Love Life - the Portal for the Promotion of Sexual Health
The Success Story continues
"Open, communicative and modern - that's what the new LIEBESLEBEN ("Love Life") brand stands for," is how Dr. Heidrun Thaiss, Head of the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA), describes the current platform for the prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STI).
With this platform, the BZgA wants to build on the success of the "Gib Aids keine Chance" ("Don't give Aids a chance") and "Mach's mit" ("Do it with a condom" campaigns. Since 1987, it has been doing pioneering work in the prevention of HIV and AIDS and has been a role model internationally.
Use Condoms
In terms of communication, LIEBESLEBEN was introduced for the first time in May 2016 with a cartoon campaign. In addition to the message "use condoms", the aim is also to reduce the anxiety of going to the doctor if an infection is suspected.
Expansion of the Topic Range
Online, the thematic spectrum of LIEBESLEBEN has been expanded beyond HIV/AIDS and now also includes the prevention of other sexually transmitted infections. Not only are different target groups and different forms of sexual orientation taken into account, but sensitive communication issues are also addressed. For example: How can I talk to my partner if I find out that I have an STI?
Anonymous Online Counseling and Methods for Professionals
In addition to the information and advice services for the general public, an extensive section has been set up for educational professionals: A variety of methods are available to them to support their prevention work on the ground.
Modular and consistent
The modular design concept ensures consistency across all end devices and maximum flexibility in content management.
As part of the project, d-SIRE was responsible for consulting, the concept, graphic design and development of the responsive, modular front end as well as for the CMS implementation with TYPO3.
Easy Language for Love Life
This is Easy Language
d-SIRE works for the Federal Center for Health Education.
d-SIRE is an English abbreviation.
It is pronounced like this: dee - sai - er
d-SIRE makes websites.
The LIEBESLEBEN website is made by d-SIRE.
Pages in Easy Language are also made by d-SIRE.
The pictures on the site are also part of it.
The pictures help you understand the texts on the LIEBESLEBEN website even better.
Even more Love for Easy Language at LIEBESLEBEN
Easy Language is an important means of communication to reach people with learning difficulties in the best possible way. Although public authorities are legally obliged to provide a small amount of basic information in Easy Language, in practice this sparse content is only of limited help to the target group. The BZgA takes an ambitious stance here and offers significantly more content in Easy Language.
Content expansion and new design
All content was critically reviewed involving people from the target group. These crucial findings were then incorporated into the design phase.
Now that it has been completed, the entire spectrum of important topics is covered. A total of 34 pages are now available in Easy Language at www.liebesleben.de.
We created the new texts together with a specialist agency and optimized them for comprehensibility with the target group, while continuously coordinating them with the BZgA.
More than 150 themed iÍllustrations
The visual design was also completely redeveloped as part of the project. It is common in Easy Language to support the understanding of texts with drawn illustrations. Unfortunately, most websites use a widespread standard set of illustrations for this purpose, which is very reminiscent of low-quality clipart from the early 1990s.
The set of more than 150 illustrations created by d-SIRE sets a completely new benchmark for the design of content in plain language:
- An independent drawing style, perfectly matching the corporate design of LIEBESLEBEN.
- All images are developed precisely to match the respective text content. This supports comprehension in the best possible way.
- In addition, the illustrations avoid stereotypical depictions of sexuality and human relationships - an important concern of LIEBESLEBEN.
For more Tolerance and against Prejudice
World AIDS Day takes place every year on December 1. It aims to promote solidarity for people with HIV and AIDS and counteract discrimination. It also commemorates the people who have died as a result of the infection and calls for access to prevention and medical care for everyone worldwide.
Everything is focused on December 1
The website is a service provided by the BZgA in cooperation with Deutsche Aidshilfe and the German AIDS Foundation. Its special feature is that its relevance is focused on a single day of the year.
Once upon a Time
In the past, celebrities were the protagonists of the campaigns for a long time: Philip Lahm, Christiane Paul, Samy de Luxe, Anni Friesinger and Boris Becker were among those involved in the annual campaigns for World Aids Day.
Realigned Communication includes affected People
The last few years have been characterized by a shift in celebrity testimonials towards the perspective of HIV-infected people.
Under the title "Living with HIV – different than you think", HIV-infected people give an insight into their lives. Contrary to popular belief, they make it clear that an almost completely normal and relaxed life with HIV is possible. However, prejudice and discrimination are still the order of the day - World AIDS Day continues to help overcome this.
The Infectastic STI as a Comedy Format
Education x Attention
The prevention of sexually transmitted infections is an increasingly important topic, but one that is not often talked about. There is rarely any great enthusiasm to delve deeper into this topic when reading. This type of content is only suitable for the fast-paced world of social network timelines to a limited extent.
So how can serious messages be packaged more attractively and for a young target group? And how do cringe-free comedy and a federal authority fit together?
Presenting the Infectastic STI
The infectastic STI - these are Trippo Tripper, Feig Feigwarze, Chlam Chlamydie, Hepp Hepatitis and Philis Syphillis. As hand puppets, equally quirky, cheeky and yet cuddly, they usually go in good spirits in search of suitable hosts for the next infection. In 4 seasons with over 70 video episodes to date, they are particularly happy about opportunities to spread during unprotected sex. They also hijack the LIEBESLEBEN telephone hotline to give those affected the worst possible advice. What puts them in a bad mood, on the other hand, are LIEBESLEBEN posters that contradict their very own concerns.
Perfect as social Content and also integrated into LIEBESLEBEN
The infectastic STI are perfect for the world of attention economy: with their roughly one-minute, quickly edited clips, they are ideal for consumption "in passing". The incentive to click on to the next clip after watching it and continue following the adventures of the protagonists is high. At the same time, they effectively convey the BZgA's messages – without any finger-wagging. d-SIRE was responsible for the design and technical realization of the infektastic STI for the web – initially as a standalone page, later integrated into the main LIEBESLEBEN portal. Each time the LIEBESLEBEN page is called up, the five protagonists rotate in the bottom left-hand corner of the page and thus attract viewers to their videos.
Exceptionally vivid Multi-lingual Education
Low-Threshold and culturally sensitive Sex Education
Zanzu is a sexuality education program aimed in particular at newly arrived migrants. It was originally conceived by Sensoa, the Flemish expert center for sexual health and the Federal Centre for Health Education (BZgA). With a particularly simple, pictorial presentation and read-aloud functions, it enables low-threshold access to these topics and also takes culturally specific sensitivities into account.
Easily accessible Information in 13 Languages
Zanzu provides the most important information on various topics in 13 languages. These range from general body knowledge to contraception, sexual health and legal aspects. Professionals such as doctors also receive specific tools for providing advice in everyday practice.
The Success is exported to Norway
Due to the high level of acceptance of the German Zanzu website, the BZgA and we received a request from Helsedirektoratet, the Norwegian Directorate of Health, to adapt this information for the Scandinavian country. This implementation currently comprises nine languages - from Norwegian to Arabic - and was also realized by d-SIRE on the basis of TYPO3.
