Stolpersteine Deutschland (Stumbling Stones Germany)
With the app, we want to digitally support the culture of remembrance of the victims of National Socialism.
To commemorate people who must never be forgotten.
An App to commemorate People who must never be forgotten
In conjunction with the "Stumbling Stones" art memorial, we would like to digitally support the culture of remembrance of the victims of National Socialism. To this end, we use and compile publicly available data from the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia and Google Maps.
The personal stories and fates are thus made directly accessible at the places in Germany where they happened.
There are already more than 20,000 stumbling stones in the app at the launch in November 2022. We are continuously adding more; currently there are already 30,000.
Stumbling Stones Germany is largely accessible and can be used by people with significant visual impairments and limited motor skills.
The app was realized by us on our own initiative without taxpayers' money or donations.
The largest decentralized Memorial in the World
"A person is only forgotten when his name is forgotten," says Gunter Demnig, quoting the Talmud. To commemorate the victims of the Nazi era, the artist places small brass memorial plaques in the sidewalk in front of the last place they chose to live or work.
Demnig began with the first stumbling stone in 1992 and there are now more than 100,000 in over 1,000 German municipalities and 30 countries.
The art project is considered the largest decentralized memorial in the world and focuses attention on the people who were persecuted, murdered, deported or expelled during the Nazi regime.
Map-based Visualization and supplemented with Content
All the stones are visualized exactly where they are laid within the map view. The closer you zoom in, the more detailed the display becomes - right down to the individually laid stumbling stone with its inscription and further content or photos. Personal biographies and information about the stumbling stones are made "accessible" directly on site via the geodata in the app.
Numerous publications in the press and a high ranking in the App Store underline the great interest.
Free download of the app for iOS and iPad OS as well as for devices with Android.
